http://www.socialstudiesforkids.com/articles/sports/summer_olympics_first1.htm
The first modern Olympic games were held in Athens,Greece in 1896.There were 14 nations that sent only men totalling 245.The games took place from 6th April - 15th April and the number of events staged that year were 43, in 9 different sports including: Gymnastics, Cycling, Fencing, Shooting, Swimming, Tennis, Track, Field, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
Archaeologist Ernst Curtius from Germany excavated (dug up) the ruins of Greece's ancient city-state of Olympia from 1875-1881. Among the ruins he found the remains of the gigantic Olympic stadium, which was home to the ancient Olympics 776-393 B.C. This discovery inspired the imagination of many people who dreamt of beginning an international sports competition. One such person was french educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who made it his number one priority to revive the spirit of fellowship and competitiveness found in the ancient Olympics. He organised an international meeting in Sorbonne in France, on 23rd of June in 1894. From the meeting came the organisation of the Olympic committee, which two years later called for the first Olympic games in Athens.
